Art Paris: Meeting with Niloufar Banisadr
Niloufar was a very nice meeting!
Her photographs, whether portraits of women or abstract shots, very often take on autobiographical overtones, recurrently evoking, in a 'narrative' style, subjects such as the emancipation of women and freedom of expression. Her unique technique of superimposing photos transcends the basic image, and against a backdrop of a calligraphic poem by a 10th-century Persian author, or a Mona Lisa, she brings us the power of expression and freedom that the world so desperately needs!
ABOUT THE ARTIST
She was born in 1973 in Tehran, where she grew up and trained in photography. She moved to France in 2003, first to Strasbourg and then to Paris, where she continued to develop her photography.
Her already prolific output has been exhibited in Dubai and Istanbul, as well as in Arles and Paris, and she is beginning to make a name for herself in the world of photography and contemporary art. In 2013, Niloufar Banisadr, who has French nationality, helped set up the 55 Bellechasse gallery, which opened with a retrospective of 15 years of his work, including several previously unpublished series. Niloufar Banisadr's work, which she has been building up over the last 22 years, consists of a series that is sometimes abstract, most of the time figurative, all linked by the common thread of a certain idea of femininity.
Niloufar Banisadr's approach as an author is perceived as committed and sometimes controversial, and she presents it as an introspection into her questions and experiences as a woman, conducted in a narrative and illustrative mode. Attentive to her own body, but also to the context of her generation in the East and the West, the expatriate artist does not hesitate to put herself on stage. Combining self-portraits and dreamlike figures, interpreting her questioning of the "apparent clash of cultures" in Iran, Niloufar Banisadr has now established herself as an internationally recognised artist, whose work is exhibited in galleries and museums in Miami and New York as well as Basel and Paris.
